When a mixture of Chromium oxide and aluminum  is ignited, an aluminothermic reaction will occur to produce elemental chromium and aluminum trioxide. This reaction is different from the traditional aluminothermic reaction with Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 as reactants. It only emits dazzling light, but there is little spark, smoke and sound.
Reaction with non-metals
Chromium oxide can also be reduced by non-metals and react with carbon to produce elemental chromium and release carbon oxides:
Cr2O3 + 3 C → 2 Cr + 3 CO
2 Cr2O3 + 3 C → 4 Cr + 3 CO2
Partially reduced by reaction with boron:
2 Cr2O3 + 7 B → CrB + Cr3B2 + 2 B2O3

Reaction with acids and bases
Cr2O3 is an amphoteric oxide, which dissolves in acid to form chromium (III) ions and melts with alkali to form chromite (CrO2−).

When reacting with stronger oxidants, such as permanganate, it is oxidized to chromium trioxde.
When heated with hydrogen sulfide, it produces chromium sulfide:
Cr2O3+ 3 H2S → Cr2S3+ 3 H2O

Chromium oxide is an inorganic oxide with the chemical formula Cr2O3, in which chromium is in the +3 oxidation state. Chromium oxide is one of the common chromium oxides and is used to prepare other chromium compounds. The crystal structure of Cr2O3 is similar to that of Al2O3, with oxygen atoms in a cubic close-packed structure and chromium occupying 2/3 of the octahedral voids. It is antiferromagnetic at 307K (Néel temperature).

Production and Application

Chromium oxide is the final product of thermal decomposition of many chromium compounds and chromium complexes. Chromium oxide can also be obtained by burning chromates and dichromates in the presence of reducing agents.

Chromium oxide is mainly produced from chromite (Fe(CrO2)2). In the process, chromite is first oxidized to (Na2Cr2O7), and then reduced with carbon or sulfur to obtain Chromium oxide.

Hydrated Chromium oxide is the main component of chrome green material.

 

Uses
1. Lead chrome green is the main coloring pigment in the coating industry. Most green paints are formulated with this pigment. In addition, it is also used in paints and plastics. Its application range is very similar to that of lead chrome yellow. Because it contains chrome yellow, pay attention to the toxicity of its lead content when using it. Lead chrome green contains iron blue and the oxidant lead chromate, so when the dust encounters sparks, it may spontaneously combust. Be careful when drying and crushing. After burning, lead chrome green completely loses the characteristics of green pigment and turns into a dark brown-yellow substance. In addition, when making  lacquer, the rolling process does not directly use lead chrome green for rolling, but uses the process of grinding lead chrome green into pulp and then adding it to prevent burning during rolling.

2. Used in metallurgy, and also used as raw materials for ceramics, refractory materials, pigment industry, and organic synthesis catalysts.

3. Used as analytical reagents and catalysts.

4. Used as coloring, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance fillers for adhesives and sealants. It can also be used as a colorant for enamel, ceramics, artificial leather, and building materials; a catalyst for organic chemical synthesis; a sun-resistant coating and a special ink for printing banknotes.

5. It is used as a colorant for cosmetics, mainly for eye cosmetics, but not for oral and lip cosmetics, and is not recommended for facial cosmetics and nail polish.
